Roughcasting Work We Carry Out
Cracks, hollow patches or damp showing inside? Book a free survey and we will tell you what the walls need.
Scotland's Traditional Wall Finish
Roughcasting, often called harling in Scotland, is a textured render made from a mix of lime, cement, sand and small stones. It has been used on Scottish homes for centuries because it sheds rain and stands up to wind and frost.
Over time roughcast cracks, comes away from the wall in hollow patches and stains. Once water gets behind it, damp can work through to the inside of the house. A new roughcast finish protects the walls again and makes a tired house look cared for.
- Signs it needs doing: cracks and missing patches
- Hollow-sounding areas when tapped
- Damp patches on inside walls
- Staining and algae that will not wash off

Why Choose Us for Roughcasting
We can roughcast your walls and chimney at the same time as roof work, sharing scaffolding and saving you a second job.
Loose and hollow render is removed back to a sound surface before new coats go on.
You pay when the work is complete and you are happy with the finish.
We look at the walls, explain what they need and give you a written quote.
Roughcasting and Rendering in Perth
Whole House Roughcasting
When roughcast has cracked or blown across large areas, patching rarely lasts or matches. A full new finish protects every wall and gives the house a fresh, even look.
You can choose from a range of colours and textures. We protect windows and doors before we start and leave the site tidy when we finish.

Chimney Stack Roughcasting
Chimney stacks take the worst of the weather and their roughcast often fails first. On a recent full roof replacement in Perth, we roughcast the whole chimney stack as part of the job, improving both its appearance and its resistance to the elements.

Cracked and Hollow Render
Tap a wall and listen. A hollow sound means the render has come away from the surface behind it, and it will eventually fall off. We take back loose and blown areas to a sound base and repair the surface before new coats are applied.
If only part of a wall has failed, we will tell you whether a repair will blend in or whether a full elevation will give a better result.

How We Roughcast Your Home
We inspect the walls, check for hollow and cracked areas, and talk through colours and finishes.
You get a clear, no-obligation quote that sets out the work, with no deposit to pay.
Windows, doors and surfaces are protected, failed render is removed, and the new roughcast is applied.
We check the finish, clean up and walk you round the completed work.

Roughcasting Questions
How much does roughcasting cost in Perth?
It depends on the wall area, the height of the house and the scaffolding needed, how much old render has to come off, any repairs to the surface underneath, and the finish you choose. We look at the walls at a free survey and give you a written quote, with no deposit to pay.
What is the difference between roughcasting and rendering?
Rendering is the general term for a coating applied to external walls. Roughcasting is a type of render with small stones in the mix, which gives the textured finish common on Scottish homes. It is also known as harling.
Can you roughcast over existing render?
Only where the existing render is sound and firmly attached. Loose, cracked or hollow render has to come off first, otherwise the new coat will fail with it. We check this at the survey.
Can roughcasting be done in winter?
Roughcast should not be applied in frost or heavy rain, so in winter we plan the work around the weather. Your quote will include a realistic timeline.
Do you roughcast chimneys?
Yes. We roughcast chimney stacks on their own or as part of a roof replacement, when the scaffolding is already in place.
Do you charge a deposit?
No. We never ask for money upfront. You pay once the work is complete and you are happy with it.
Which areas do you cover?
We cover Perth, Scone, Bridge of Earn, Auchterarder, Kinross, Crieff, Blairgowrie and Dunblane, and the wider Perth and Kinross area.

From my first conversation with Jaime to arrange an appointment, to Ronnie providing the quote, and Jonny and Ben carrying out the work, I’m extremely happy with my decision to choose Speedy Roofing. They installed a lightweight roof in my conservatory, and I’m really pleased with the finished result. It has made a noticeable difference in keeping my home warmer and looks great!! The team even left the room cleaner than I left it, which was a great touch! I felt completely comfortable throughout the whole process, and Grant was always quick to respond to any questions I had. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again and would highly recommend them to others.Posted on Google![]()

I recently had my glass conservatory roof replaced with a tiled roof and ceiling by Speedy Roofing, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From start to finish, the team were extremely informative and took the time to explain everything clearly, which made the whole process feel straightforward and stress-free. The workmanship was excellent and the transformation is incredible. The conservatory now feels like a real room that I can use all year round. Communication throughout the job was fantastic; I was kept updated at every stage and the team were always happy to answer any questions. The whole experience was professional, efficient, and completed to a very high standard. Towards the end of last year Speedy roofing replaced my roof and my wife and I are delighted with the boys. We had a few quotes but Speedy really stood out from the start and they were able to show me lots of other work they had completed in Gourock. Grant kept us informed as the scaffold went up and skip was dropped off. Gary the roofer then arrived sharp daily and worked tirelessly until the work was complete. Really happy with the whole service and couldn’t recommend the whole team highly enough!Posted on Google![]()

We have recently had a full roof replacement completed by the team at Speedy Roofing and have been very pleased with everything from start to finish. Ronnie came out to carry out an initial inspection before drawing up a very competitive and detailed quote for us. The work commenced a week after we agreed to the quote and the communication leading up to this and throughout has been great. The team worked very efficiently to complete the full roof replacement in 7 working days and we have been very pleased with the finished result. Would highly recommend Speedy Roofing to anyone looking to get work done.Posted on Google![]()

What a fantastic Roofing company! Would 100% recommend them to anyone who asked. Had my roof replaced a few weeks ago after having several quotes from different companies. When Mark came out to provide the quote, I had a good feeling about the ethos of the company from the way he explained everything and the caring nature in which he really listened to my needs. The professionalism, care and attention to my needs were exquisite. My roof had been leaking for a few months and getting worse each day, therefore I was in desperate need of a quick job. The roof was replaced by Gary and his son who worked meticulously each day and were very courteous to me and my property. The scaffolding company where also fantastic, Gary and his team were friendly and accommodating. Finally, Grant from Speedy Roofing was very attentive and answered all my questions promptly and explained everything well. My neighbours have all commented on what a great job has been done. I am super pleased that I chose Speedy Roofing to keep a roof over my head!
