The Work We Carry Out
Cracks, hollow patches or damp coming through inside? A free survey will tell you what the walls need.
Harling: Made for Scottish Weather
Roughcasting, known in Scotland as harling, is a textured render made from lime, cement, sand and small stones. It has been used on Scottish homes for centuries because it throws off rain and stands up to wind and frost, which matters on an exposed stretch of coast like the Tay.
Over time it cracks, comes away from the wall in hollow patches and stains. When water gets in behind it, damp can reach the inside walls. A new finish protects the walls again and makes the house look cared for.
- Cracks, or patches that have fallen away
- Hollow-sounding areas when tapped
- Damp patches on inside walls
- Green or black staining that will not clean off

Why Choose Us for Your Walls
We can do the walls and chimney while the scaffold is up for roof work, so you only pay for access once.
Loose and hollow render is taken back to a sound surface before any new coats go on.
Nothing to pay until the finish is done and you are happy.
We inspect the walls, tell you what they need and write down the price.
Roughcasting and Rendering in Dundee
Whole House Roughcasting
When roughcast has cracked or blown across large areas, patches rarely last or match. A complete new finish protects every wall and gives the house an even, fresh look.
You choose the colour and texture. Windows and doors are covered before work starts, and the site is left tidy.

Chimney Stack Roughcasting
Chimney stacks take the worst of the weather, and their roughcast usually fails first. We re-roughcast stacks on their own or as part of a roof replacement, when the scaffolding is already there.
Where the flashing around the stack has failed too, we renew it at the same time.

Cracked and Hollow Render
Tap the wall and listen. A hollow sound means the render has come away from the surface behind it and will eventually fall off. We take back loose and blown areas to a sound base and repair the surface before new coats go on.
Where only part of a wall has failed, we will say whether a patch will blend in or whether redoing the whole elevation looks better.

How We Roughcast Your Home
We inspect the walls, find hollow and cracked areas and talk through colours and finishes.
You get a clear, no-obligation quote, with no deposit to pay.
Windows, doors and surfaces are protected, failed render comes off, and the new coats go on.
We check the finish, clean up and walk you round the completed work.

Roughcasting Questions
How much does roughcasting cost in Dundee?
The main factors are the wall area, the height of the house and its scaffolding, how much old render must come off, repairs underneath and the finish you pick. A free survey gives you a written price, with no deposit.
Is roughcasting the same as harling?
Yes. Harling is the traditional Scottish name for roughcast, a render with small stones in the mix that gives the textured finish common on Scottish homes. Rendering is the broader term for any coating applied to external walls.
Can new roughcast go over the old?
Only if the old render is sound and well bonded to the wall. Loose, cracked or hollow render has to come off first, or the new coat will fail with it. The survey will show which.
Can it be done in winter?
Roughcast should not go on in frost or heavy rain, so through the winter we plan the work around the weather. Your quote includes a realistic timeline.
Do you roughcast chimney stacks?
Yes, on their own or as part of a roof replacement while the scaffolding is in place.
Do you charge a deposit?
No. You pay when the walls are finished and you are happy with them.
Which areas do you cover?
We cover Dundee, Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Invergowrie, Arbroath and Forfar, and the rest of Angus and Tayside.

From my first conversation with Jaime to arrange an appointment, to Ronnie providing the quote, and Jonny and Ben carrying out the work, I’m extremely happy with my decision to choose Speedy Roofing. They installed a lightweight roof in my conservatory, and I’m really pleased with the finished result. It has made a noticeable difference in keeping my home warmer and looks great!! The team even left the room cleaner than I left it, which was a great touch! I felt completely comfortable throughout the whole process, and Grant was always quick to respond to any questions I had. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again and would highly recommend them to others.Posted on Google![]()

I recently had my glass conservatory roof replaced with a tiled roof and ceiling by Speedy Roofing, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From start to finish, the team were extremely informative and took the time to explain everything clearly, which made the whole process feel straightforward and stress-free. The workmanship was excellent and the transformation is incredible. The conservatory now feels like a real room that I can use all year round. Communication throughout the job was fantastic; I was kept updated at every stage and the team were always happy to answer any questions. The whole experience was professional, efficient, and completed to a very high standard. I would highly recommend Speedy Roofing to anyone considering a conservatory roof conversion or any roofing work. Fantastic service all round!Posted on Google![]()

Towards the end of last year Speedy roofing replaced my roof and my wife and I are delighted with the boys. We had a few quotes but Speedy really stood out from the start and they were able to show me lots of other work they had completed in Gourock. Grant kept us informed as the scaffold went up and skip was dropped off. Gary the roofer then arrived sharp daily and worked tirelessly until the work was complete. Really happy with the whole service and couldn’t recommend the whole team highly enough!Posted on Google![]()

We have recently had a full roof replacement completed by the team at Speedy Roofing and have been very pleased with everything from start to finish. Ronnie came out to carry out an initial inspection before drawing up a very competitive and detailed quote for us. The work commenced a week after we agreed to the quote and the communication leading up to this and throughout has been great. The team worked very efficiently to complete the full roof replacement in 7 working days and we have been very pleased with the finished result. Would highly recommend Speedy Roofing to anyone looking to get work done.Posted on Google![]()

What a fantastic Roofing company! Would 100% recommend them to anyone who asked. Had my roof replaced a few weeks ago after having several quotes from different companies. When Mark came out to provide the quote, I had a good feeling about the ethos of the company from the way he explained everything and the caring nature in which he really listened to my needs. The professionalism, care and attention to my needs were exquisite. My roof had been leaking for a few months and getting worse each day, therefore I was in desperate need of a quick job. The roof was replaced by Gary and his son who worked meticulously each day and were very courteous to me and my property. The scaffolding company where also fantastic, Gary and his team were friendly and accommodating. Finally, Grant from Speedy Roofing was very attentive and answered all my questions promptly and explained everything well. My neighbours have all commented on what a great job has been done. I am super pleased that I chose Speedy Roofing to keep a roof over my head!
